Over the last few years, Iceland seems to have slowly gained popularity as one of the hottest tourist destinations in Europe. Between its beautiful natural landscape, insanely scenic roads, and magical Northern Lights, it’s no surprise that people flock here for a holiday year after year. And those who are lucky enough to go come back with nothing but praise for the pristine ruggedness of this incredible country.
As most people land in Reykjavik, the South of Iceland is an ideal place to start your trip. But, with so many things to see and do, it’s hard to stay put in one place. So if you’re like me – endlessly dreaming about visiting Iceland – why not check out my list of 5 epic things I’d love to see and do when I finally get there. I promise it’s a good one!

01. SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS
Let’s get the most obvious one out of the way first, shall we? I, like most people wanting to visit Iceland, would absolutely love to see the Northern Lights. And while there are places you can drive to so you can see them yourself, I think I’d much prefer to book myself onto a Northern lights trip instead. This is because the people running them will know exactly where to take you to witness this beautiful sight. And they’ll know of alternative spots for when the weather isn’t co-operating as well.
The best time to see the Northern Lights in Iceland is from September to mid-April, as these are the months where there are full dark nights. And as you can see from the image above, this natural phenomenon is truly a sight to see. The only problem with going to Iceland specifically to see them is that they can be a little unpredictable. Most tourist guides recommend you allocate yourself at least a week there to give yourself the best possible chance of seeing them. I reckon it’s got to be worth it though. I mean, where else are you going to find such a spectacular light show?

02. GO WATERFALL HUNTING
Anyone who knows me well will know that whenever I go for a walk and come across a waterfall, I’m absolutely mesmerised by it. I just think there’s something breathtaking about watching water plunge from a great height into a stream or river below. Iceland is said to be full of jaw-dropping waterfalls that I’d absolutely love to see. And whilst visiting every single one of them may be a little ambitious, I’d be in my element hunting down a few of them at least.

03. SNORKEL BETWEEN TWO CONTINENTS
Ever since I heard that you can snorkel through the Silfra Fissure in Iceland, it’s been something I’ve been dying to do! With a visibility of over 100m, the water here is the clearest in the world due to constant filtering by lava rocks. And it’s so clean and clear that you can actually drink the water here. However, what makes this place exceptionally cool is that it’s the only place in the world where you can swim through two tectonic plates – the North American and Eurasian continental plates. I’d love to one day be able to tell my grandkids about the time I swam between two continents. How amazing would that be?!

04. GO ADVENTURING
I like to think of myself as someone who will try anything once. So, naturally, my list of things I’d love to do in Iceland had to include something adventurous. And what better way to get an adrenaline fix than by doing something extreme. In Iceland, you can go glacier snowmobiling, white water rafting, skiing, snowboarding, and even tour on an ATV. The possibilities are endless! Just imagine how cool it would be to explore the vast wilderness using snowmobiles and ATV’s. When I finally make that trip to Iceland, you’ll know exactly where to find me. Eek!

05. VISIT THE BLUE LAGOON
And last but not least, I don’t think any trip to Iceland would be complete without stopping by the famous Blue Lagoon. Although now becoming more and more touristy, this geothermal spa located in a lava field in Grindavík is one of Iceland’s most visited tourist destinations. Thousands of visitors come to experience pure serenity, relaxation, and rejuvenation in the Blue Lagoon, where the water is naturally heated by lava fields, making it rich in sulfur and silica which are known for their natural, age-defying healing powers. As someone who is obsessed with beauty treatments, I think the Blue Lagoon would be right up my street. Pure bliss!

While I could probably go on for hours about the many things I’d love to do in Iceland, I’m going to leave it here, as I think the ones I’ve listed would be perfect, to begin with. Now all I have to do is save up some money and get booking my dream trip. It’s so exciting!
