We were recently invited along to a Play at Brewers Fayre event at our local Brewers Fayre pub restaurant, the Castlewood in South Normanton, Derbyshire (just off junction 28 of the M1). The event was being held to celebrate the grand re-opening of their play area, which has had a revamp … and we couldn’t wait to go along and see what it was like!
On the day we were joined by my sister-in-law, Lucy and niece, Amelia. So if you see any unfamiliar faces in any of my pictures, it will be one of those two!
When we arrived at the Castlewood Brewers Fayre I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised. For some reason I had been expecting a pokey little restaurant with a tiny children’s play area, when in fact it was quite the opposite!
The play area itself is really big compared to ones we’ve seen in other eateries, and the decor is lovely and bright with an awesome Dennis the Menace theme throughout. There is plenty of seating areas for adults to sit while the little ones play, and you can also eat your meal in there too, which is great for people like me who don’t like to keep moving from one area to another once they’ve got comfy!
The play area has two different sections : a free soft play area for the really little ones, and a larger play area with things to climb up, slides and rope swings for the bigger kids. The larger play area does cost £3 per child to use, but these areas are fully supervised and cleaned regularly so I do think it offers great value for money. Height restrictions also apply.
As well as the two awesome play areas, the Castlewood Brewers Fayre also has a little zone where the kids can just ‘chill out’. In this zone there was a seating area made up of super comfy looking bean bags and a TV (playing episodes of Dennis the Menace, of course). There was also a table full of Dennis the Menace colouring sheets and masks to make. As Oscar has recently discovered colouring, he absolutely loved sitting and scribbling on some of these!
As well as getting to try out the new and improved play area, we also got to sample the Beano inspired Children’s Menu too! For the size of each portion, I think they offer great value for money, with a main meal costing £3.99, 2 courses costing £4.49 and 3 courses costing £4.99. You just can’t go wrong!
Stacey and Amelia had grilled chicken with chips and peas for their main meal and they both did us proud by clearing their plates, and Oscar had bacon and sweetcorn pizza with grrrrrlic bread and salad.

The kids desserts looked absolutely delicious as well. Stacey and Amelia polished off a chocolate indulgent sundae each, and Oscar tried some lip-smacking tricky mini doughnuts.
The meals that myself and Lucy tried from the restaurants main menu were delicious as well. Yum!
Overall I thought the play area and kids menu were fantastic, and I will most definitely return to the Castlewood Brewers Fayre again in the future. Thank you so much for inviting us guys!
