Getting your first car is a big moment. You get freedom, you get late night food runs, you never have to wait in line for a bus again. It’s all there. But before you start picking colours and naming it something ridiculous, there’s one big decision to make. Auto or manual.
It sounds so simple, but it really isn’t, so we’re going to simplify it for you. Manual cars are a bit like making tea properly instead of microwaving it. There’s more involvement, you’re changing gears, working in the clutch, actually driving the car. In the UK, manual cars are still very common and they’re often cheaper to buy. Insurance can be slightly lower too, especially for new drivers. Plus, if you pass your test in a manual, you’re legally allowed to drive both manual and automatic vehicles. Handy.

That being said, stalling at traffic lights while everyone behind you sighs loudly, it’s a rite of passage. Manual cars also tend to give you a little bit more control, especially on twisty roads or in tricky weather. Some drivers just enjoy the feel of it. Automatic drivers understand that that car is there for an easy life. Automatic cars take away the clutch and the gear changes. You’ve basically got ‘go’ and ‘stop’. It’s like Mario Kart but on the road and no bananas flying out the back. For nervous drivers or people who just want an easier time in stop start traffic, autos are great. No rolling backwards on hills, no panic gear changes at roundabouts, just smooth driving.
They used to be more expensive than slightly thirstier on fuel, but modern automatics have come a very long way. The gap isn’t what it used to be. If you’re looking at something compact and city friendly like a Kia small car, you’ll often find both manual and automatic options available. So it really comes down to preference rather than availability. You need to be honest about your driving life. Are you driving mostly in the town with endless traffic? An automatic could save your left leg from a workout. Lots of country roads or longer motorway journeys? Manuals can feel more engaging and sometimes more.
You also need to consider who else might be driving the car. If your parents, partner or mates might borrow it, make sure they’re comfortable with the gearbox that you choose. For a first car, cost usually does play a big role. Budget matters here, sorry. Manuals are generally cheaper to buy youth and it’s a bigger selection out there. Insurance is the real kicker for new drivers though, so get quotes before you fall in love with anything. Sometimes the difference between auto and manual isn’t big, but sometimes it is.
The right choice? Well there isn’t 1. If you enjoy being hands on and want flexibility with future cars, manual makes sense. If you’d rather keep things simple and stress free, automatic as your new best friend. Your first card doesn’t have to be your forever car, it just needs to get you where you want to go safely and affordably.
