Have you just moved into a new home and are wondering what to do with the garden next spring, or maybe you’ve lived in your current place for a while but have never done that much with the outside space? It might seem like a strange time to start thinking about it now, now that the best of the weather for the year is behind us but it’s actually the perfect time. It means you can plan properly, not just make decisions on a whim.
You can spread the cost too, and now’s the best time to get garden furniture and equipment cheap as shops tend to sell it off on clearance in the autumn and winter. Even if you cant use the garden all that much until next April or so, that time will roll around before you know it and you’ll be glad you put the work in now. Here are some jobs to consider for making your garden more usable when the sun starts shining again.
CLEAR IT OUT
First things first, now is a great time to start clearing out your garden. Things like kids summer toys, paddling pools, any furniture that will become damaged in rain and snow should all be wrapped up and stored away so that you’re able to use it all again next year. Many of us make the same mistake of not looking after these things properly and having to rebuy them, and it’s a waste of money and bad for the environment when you’re replacing things that can easily be reused with a bit of care. Now is a good time to cut back shrubs, deadhead flowers and other autumn garden jobs as well now that most things have finished flowering for the year.
LOOK INTO LANDSCAPING AND BUILDING WORKS
Landscaping and building works in the garden are all dependant on the weather, and it’s always hit and miss in the autumn. But right now we still have some periods of non rainy weather (which probably wont be the case in a few more weeks) so if you want any structural changes making then now’s the time to do it. Landscaping companies are likely to be less busy now that the summer rush is over and might be able to do better prices as well. If you’re after some gorgeous decking with a balustrade to sit and enjoy the sunshine in the spring, or a garden wall to section your garden and create different ‘zones’ then now might be a good time to do it rather than wait until the new year.
THINK ABOUT PLANTING
Getting some bulbs into the ground now will mean you have lots of nice blooms come up next year. If you leave it until the sunshine rolls back around you’ll have to wait until the following year so it’s well worth being prepared now.
BUY FURNITURE AND EQUIPMENT
Finally, lots of shops have their garden items on clearance at the minute. So if you were admiring a certain set or had your eye on something in particular for the garden a few months ago but couldnt justify the price then it’s well worth revisiting now as things can have huge discounts this time of year. Even things like gardening tools, grass seed etc can be snapped up much cheaper than you would have paid in the summer and can be stored away.
