We have all been spending a lot more time at home as of late. Maybe you, like many other people, have started to think about how to transform your home into a safe haven that you want to spend time in. It may seem frustrating that there is so much in the world that we don’t have any control over, but we can control the space in which we spend our time.
Taking some time to create a space that you love and feel comfortable in will go a long way towards improving your mood and mental health. Creating a peaceful space can help you reduce stress and be present in the moment. Taking care of your physical space can also help inspire you to take better care of yourself through self-care and self-love practices. Here are some ways that you can make your home a haven that contributes to a feeling of peace and warmness for the whole family.

LIGHT
Lighting is so important and greatly influences the mood of a space. Having several different kinds of light is important because our needs differ throughout the day and year. Our mental health is tied to the amount of natural light we receive, even if we are indoors, so it is important to have windows that let in lots of natural light. The modern architectural design uses quality windows, so if your windows are dated, you may want to consider updating.
Being aware of how much natural light we are letting into our space is important. Leave the blinds and curtains open to let in more light during the day instead of relying on artificial lights. You can also have a space in your yard that is designed to help you take in more sunlight. Taking in fresh air and sunlight helps our bodies produce Vitamin D which is necessary to boost happiness and overall body health.

CLEANLINESS
Cleaning can be a chore that we procrastinate, especially if there are fewer people coming over to visit. We may be letting cleanliness slide a little bit, but having a messy space can negatively affect our mental health. Taking the time to pick up your house, declutter, and clean you are practicing self-care. Some people even think of cleaning as a form of mindfulness that helps them connect to the present moment.

PERSONAL SPACE
Claiming a personal space in your home is important whether you live by yourself or with a lot of other people. You should pick a specific place in your home and make it feel meaningful to you in some way. It can be a specific chair and side table where you read or write in your journal with a candle burning. It can be a bathroom that is decorated to feel like a spa for bath time. It can be an altar by your bed. The specifics don’t matter. What does matter is that it is special to you and helps you feel your best and remember who you are.

SOUND
We live in a loud world. There are sounds barraging us from all sides from traffic, people talking, phones, music, TV, and other devices. We are so used to the sound that we have gotten used to the constant clash of sounds and don’t notice how jarring it can be all day long.
Try to be aware of how much noise pollution there is in your home and try to lessen it if possible. Unplug appliances when they are not in use. Have family members use headphones. Take some time from each day to just sit and notice the silence. If you take more care to notice the sounds you let in your body, your nervous system will thank you!

BED
Our brains are incredible things. They train themselves to associate certain activities with certain places. That means that if you always study at the same desk in the library, that eventually when you sit down it will be easier to focus because your brain associates that place with working hard.
The same thing goes for our personal spaces, especially the bed. It can be tempting to do lots of activities in bed because it is so comfortable. Spending too much time in our beds can confuse our brains and disrupt our sleep patterns. Try not to work, watch TV, or scroll social media in bed. We want our brains to associate bed with relaxation. If we keep the bed for sleeping, then we will be able to get better sleep each night.
