The current situation with the COVID-19 pandemic has required that we all shift our lifestyle to slow the spread of the virus. Travel is one of the things that needs to be adjusted, and yet with it still being summer I am thinking of those classic summer trips. Even though things are looking a bit brighter in the UK, it is still a very bad time to travel abroad. Luckily there are some things you can do to appease your wanderlust and still stay safe.
8 things to do instead of travelling abroad:

01. Learn a foreign language
Learning and speaking a foreign language can make you feel like you are somewhere else and also be beneficiary to your future travels. There are plenty of resources you can use from home, the most convenient being language apps. Babbel for example, available on all platforms including iOS, is the perfect app to master a foreign language quickly, participate in virtual language groups, and do daily activities in the target language to advance your language skills.
02. Travel virtually
You can visit beautiful places from the safety of your own by traveling virtually. For example, you can use Google Earth to explore national parks or go on a tour of a museum. 100% safe and it may teach you whether you want to visit the sites in person or not as well!
03. Take a foreign cuisine cooking class
Food is a way you can experience different cultures, and you can make it a special experience where you learn local dishes of a dream destination of yours through a cooking class. It is a safe virtual activity and it is fun to do! You may even come out of it with some new recipes, an inspired cooking style, or even just a new appreciation for your kitchen and the fun that can be had there!

04. Create photo albums of past travels
While we may not be able to travel now, we can flip through old photos and reminisce on the incredible trips we have already been on! This can help you remember and relive details of your trips you may have forgotten and/or special moments that bring you joy. It can be a fun activity to call up who you travelled with and recall all the wonderful memories, too.
05. Binge-watch travel shows
Television shows are a way you can feel like you are somewhere else and appreciate the beautiful views. For example, there is Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown and the new Netflix show Down to Earth with Zac Efron.
06. Take a travel photography course
If you love to take photos while you travel, take this time to take a travel photography course! You can learn a lot now, experience the travel inspiration as you go, and be even happier with your travel photos in the future.

07. Explore locally!
Incredible travel does not have to be abroad, it can also be in your own local area! Plan a staycation or day trips where you explore somewhere new or just get out and about to appreciate your area. Make it special and do things (safely) that you love to do while travelling. Pack a picnic, spend time outdoors, walk through neighbourhoods, etc.
You can even hire a campervan to make local travel a little bit easier to get that holiday feel. And the best part of a campervan is that you’re saving money on a hotel and eating in restaurants, while also getting to explore a new destination. Just remember to pack your essentials and take out campervan insurance.
08. Make your ultimate bucket list of trips for when we can go back to travelling
As you imagine your future trips, what are the top places you want to go to? Write it down and keep your ultimate bucket list of trips so that you have something to reference when the time comes that we can travel again! While you do these safe things at home, you may come up with some new ideas of where you’d really like to go.
This time spent not travelling is also the perfect occasion to save up for a future trip! You might be able to go on that expensive dream trip you’ve been putting off for years when all is safe again.
