The last few months have changed everybody’s perspective on what’s normal and what’s the new normal. Before March, you rightly took leaving the house for granted. It’s a freedom that’s never been curbed before, not even during WW1 and WW2!
Food isn’t under many restrictions, yet its importance during self-isolation is more powerful than you imagine. Not only do you need it to stay motivated and remain energetic, but it also helps with other vital areas of life.
Here are four of the main ones that may come as a surprise. The following should (hopefully) change your view on food for the long-term.

HEALTHY HABITS
What happens when you’re bored? You raid the fridge and comfort eat. Usually, it’s a habit you have to contend with at the weekend when your schedule is looser and more flexible. Since companies have furloughed staff and you can’t leave the house for a good reason, it may take over your life. It’s essential to develop healthy food habits now because they are more likely to stick with you. Aside from the fact that you have the time to invest in your diet, you can lean on the situation. Anyone who can eat well and lose weight during lockdown can replicate the routine when quarantine is over.
ENGAGEMENT
Boredom is not only, well, boring, but it’s also bad for your mental and cognitive health. Doing nothing all day encourages the brain to atrophy in the same way a muscle would if you stopped lifting weights. Of course, your mind needs to be sharp if you’re going to ward off illnesses and diseases. Cooking is a fantastic way to pass the time and engage your brain as it involves measurements, solving problems, and focusing on tasks. You can combine healthy habits and brain activities by making your favourite takeaways at home.
ADDED MOTIVATION
No matter how you try and engage and embrace the situation, you’ll find the monotony a bit of a struggle. Once this happens, it’s vital that you regain your grit and determination to survive lockdown unscathed or else you may give in completely. Food adds to your motivation levels in many ways, but the best one is by incorporating a sense of novelty. A brownie delivery is a treat that you don’t experience much right now, so when it does arrive, you’ll love the excitement. It’s a small thing, but the little victories help us through the daily grind.
COMMUNITY SPIRIT
The concept of community isn’t very strong in the 21st-century. Everybody wants to take care of themselves and put number one first. However, food has shown the country that the spirit of togetherness still exists when it’s needed the most. Disabled people and the elderly could have struggled to shop and buy enough to see out the pandemic as they had to shield. Thankfully, incredible individuals and companies assisted them by delivering food parcels to their door. You can get involved by donating money or creating boxes and offering them to vulnerable people.
