I don’t know about you guys, but I’m starting to feel like I’ve been in lockdown for an eternity. Every morning I get up and follow the exact same routine as the day before. But, believe it or not, it’s starting to feel normal now. I’m getting used to not being able to pop to McDonald’s for a cheeky bagel when I’ve dropped the kids off at school. I’m getting used to not meeting up with my mum every week for a coffee and a catch-up. And I’m getting used to not being able to go out for date night with my significant other. How sad is that!?
The lovely people over at cambridgeshiresexsite.co.uk recently asked me if I had any advice for keeping the spark alive when your partner is literally the only other human you’ll be interacting with for the foreseeable future? And, I do! So for today’s post, I thought I’d share some of my top tips on how you can create a bit of romance when quarantining with your partner. I hope you enjoy it.

KEEP AS SEPARATE AS POSSIBLE DURING YOUR WORKING DAY
During the working day, you should try and mimic your normal lifestyle – whether that’s by working in separate spaces or phoning friends and family for a chat. It’s normal to get on each other’s nerves as you’ve probably never spent this amount of time together, so try and ensure you’re not stepping on each other’s toes – this will do wonders when you come together again later on.

START WITH THE LITTLE THINGS
Simple things can mean a lot. And while classic romantic gestures may usually consist of visits to restaurants and weekends away, in this time of isolation, it’s an opportunity to take things back to basics with your partner – no matter how long you guys have been together. Simple gestures can be romantic, from making them that unexpected cup of tea to treating them to breakfast in bed. It’s a sure-fire way to keep the spark alive.

DRESS UP AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK
If you’re anything like me, your daily ‘uniform’ has probably consisted of an oversized sweater and pyjama bottoms or some comfy leggings while we’ve been in isolation. After all, no one is going to see you, and comfort is king. And while working in ‘the outside world’ will have made you slightly more presentable, it most likely means your partner isn’t used to seeing you in your elasticated best. This is why I think it’s a good idea to dress like your former selves once a week and have dinner together that evening so you don’t end up turning into an advert for a retirement home. Put on your favourite dress, a little bit of makeup, and that eternity collar you bought from etsy.com/market/eternity_collar, and you’ll soon feel like you’re worth a million dollars. Trust me, you’ll thank me for it later!

RECREATE DATE NIGHT AT HOME
Make time for date night at home by replicating things you would do on a Friday night but without leaving the house. This could be creating a cinema in the front room for a movie night, playing your favourite boards games, or reminiscing about all the wonderful times you’ve had together (including that one night you had amazing sex in Manchester)! All of these gestures will have a lasting feeling with your loved one and ensure the spark stays alive.

CREATE SOME ATMOSPHERE
Take the reins and crack open that bottle of champagne that’s been on hold for a ‘special occasion’. Light some candles around the house, dig out old photos and memories and really get to know each other again.

KEEP FLIRTING
The ability to use outside events – other than the relentlessly depressing news – to start a conversation has gone. It’s just us, our mild disillusionment with each other and a Groundhog Day existence. Recognise that a cheeky bum squeeze by the recycling bin is the equivalent of date night, and things will start to look up.

DIGITALLY DETOX FOR THE NIGHT
I don’t know about you guys, but ever since we went into isolation, I feel like I’m glued to my phone a lot more than I usually would be. And that’s not a good thing! I think it’s really important in a relationship to abandon screen time every once in a while, put your phones away, and use this unexpected opportunity we’ve been given to reconnect with one another. Because, who knows, this time of social separation could create an even more special connection between us. And that’s something special.

How are you guys keeping the spark alive with your partners during lockdown?
