It’s safe to say that in this day and age, everyone’s life is busy. And this can mean that the daily task of keeping your home clean and tidy can be exhausting. But it really doesn’t have to be. If you develop a good cleaning routine, it will make things much easier in the long run. So, for today’s post, I thought I’d share my top tips for keeping on top of the housework so you can always have a clean and tidy home. I hope you enjoy having a read of them.

01. MAKE YOUR BED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE DAY
I know it’s often said that this little chore is a waste of time, but I truly believe it’s time well spent – and that’s making your bed at the beginning of the day when you wake up. When your bed is made, it helps make your room look clean and tidy and can even help reduce stress. I think it’s the simplicity of the easy task that makes it so effective. And hey, it’s a great example to set for your kids as well.
02. PRIORITISE
As I already mentioned, making your bed at the beginning of the day is a great tip for starting the day right as far as housework goes. That being said, you don’t have to have a specific schedule for each chore every day. My top tip here would be to make a list of the things you want to get done and then prioritise them by how important it is to complete them. For example, you might be able to wait until later on in the week to do your laundry, but a sink full of dirty dishes can’t exactly wait that long. The main thing is to decide what’s important and prioritise a list that works for you and your family.

03. GET EVERYONE INVOLVED
If you have a family, it’s more than likely that you didn’t make this mess by yourself! So make sure you don’t clean it up by yourself either. Get the whole family involved by dishing out specific chores for each person. The quote ‘Many hands make light work’ by John Heywood is a good reminder when it comes to getting the house in tip-top shape, and it’s a much easier process when everyone chips in. My kids are currently 16 and 6, and I give them both a couple of chores to do each week, as well as ensuring they both keep their bedrooms clean. Stacey’s boyfriend even offers to help when he comes over – he’s fantastic at mowing the lawns!
04. STRAIGHTEN UP NIGHTLY
Once the kids are tucked up in bed at night I like to spend fifteen minutes or so straightening up, which sets us up nicely for the next day. I like to put away any stray toys that have been left lying around my living room, wash any pots that have been used since doing the after-dinner pot wash, and maybe even toss some laundry into the washer. No one wants to wake up to a messy house, and a mere fifteen minutes each night could prevent it and get the next day started off right. Bliss!

05. KEEP BASIC CLEANING SUPPLIES TO HAND
To make cleaning around the house much easier, I highly recommend keeping a caddy of basic cleaning supplies to hand in multiple places around your home. So if you have multiple bathrooms, for example, keep a stash of cleaning supplies in each one. If you don’t have as far to go to grab your cleaning stuff for each of the rooms you’re working in, it will help speed up the whole cleaning process. If you’re like me and you’re wanting to do your bit for the planet by switching from harsh chemical cleaners to something more eco-friendly, make sure you give Jangro enviro a try? They have a wide range of products for all your cleaning needs and work brilliantly as well. You’re bound to be impressed!
06. CLEAN AS YOU GO
One of my favourite habits that I’ve developed over the last few years is to always take something with me when I leave a room. Sounds simple, right!? If you see anything on the floor or anything out of place at all, you just pick it up and take it with you. After all, you’re leaving the room anyway, so it’s not like you’re having to make a special trip. I recently bought myself a stair basket as well, so I can put anything that’s made its way downstairs in there and then carry it all back up at the end of the day. And these two little tricks add up to a much tidier house overall. I love them.

07. DO A DAILY CLEAN OF YOUR BUSY ZONES
All homes have busy zones. Ours tends to be the hallway where people come into the house, and the kids kick off their shoes, and dump their coats and school bags. Clean these spaces EVERY SINGLE DAY to keep the area from being overly cluttered. When the entryway is cluttered and messy, it sets the stage for the entire home. So by hoovering and mopping the floor on a daily basis, I find we keep the rest of the house neater and tidier too.
08. DON’T TRY TO BE A PERFECTIONIST
And last, but certainly not least, as much as you want your house to look fabulous (as we all do), deep cleaning every single day simply isn’t realistic. Be okay with your home being clean and tidy, but not always looking perfect. This will save you a huge amount of time and stress, and you’ll have some time left over to look after yourself as well. What could possibly be better than that?
