When Christmas is over and January rolls around, it can feel a bit depressing. After all the excitement of the festive period, there is nothing left to look forward to for a while. And, it’s not as if you have the money to spend your way out of a funk! So, it’s not uncommon to feel a little blue at the start of the New Year.
Of course, a negative mindset troublesome if it escalates into something more serious, which is why you should nip it in the bud ASAP. Below are the best ways to kickstart your year with a bang!

CHANGE YOUR DIET
There is a lot of junk food knocking about during December. Thankfully, it’s easy to get bored of the foodstuffs in January and February you usually crave, and it’s time to take advantage. Swapping refined carbs, such as pasta and bread with complex ones that are harder to digest, will provide you with a constant flow of energy rather than sudden spikes here or there. Often, this results in feeling less tired and fatigued, two things that are synonymous with the winter blues. Veggies such as lentils and broccoli might take longer to digest, but they are better for your body and mind in the long-term.

AND YOUR WARDROBE
To look good is to feel good, so you shouldn’t dress in drab, unflattering outfits that don’t wow you when you stare in the mirror. There are two factors to consider: colour and size. The former is an excellent way to make your best features stand out and boost your self-esteem and confidence. Green dresses in many shades work well, as do blue, yellow, and pink numbers. Anything that’s light is great at blowing the cobwebs away. Size-wise, make sure you choose outfits that are flattering in all the right places.

FIND A WAY TO VENT
None of the above will help if you can’t find a way to relieve your stress levels. Holding tension in your body is unhealthy as it sits in the pit of your stomach and never goes away, increasing the chances of it boiling over. Exercising should help as getting the blood pumping releases adrenaline that burns through the negative thoughts. Working out also takes your mind off your problems and gives you some rest bite. If the gym isn’t your thing, you can try a massage or meditation. All you need for the latter is a quiet place to try and focus your mind.

REALISE YOU’RE NOT THE ONLY ONE
Although a group mindset isn’t always healthy, it can provide perspective. With that in mind, you might be glad to know that millions of people in the Northern hemisphere deal with winter blues. Yes, the realisation in itself isn’t enough to change your attitude; however, it’s a start. Sometimes, people blame themselves and fall deeper into depression as a result. Understanding it’s a common issue will encourage you to seek help from professionals or fellow sufferers.
One thing you must avoid is self-prescribed medication. Drugs will only intensify the feelings and make you feel worse than ever.
