When you’ve finished a long day at work or have been busy with the kids all day, chances are, all you want to do is relax and leave the world behind for a while. Making your house into a home is so important; your home is your own little haven, somewhere you can truly unwind and spend time with your loved ones. The money spent on your house is always a good investment and you can really create a relaxing atmosphere you can enjoy. If you’re looking around and your current surroundings don’t fill you with peace or joy then it’s time to make a change- here are some of the ways you can make your home a more relaxing place to live.

Make Use Of Colour Psychology
Neutral and pastel colours have been shown by psychologists to relax us and bring us calm and peace, just what we’re all looking for after a busy day. Use calming neutral colours on your walls, and pastel shades on your bedding and cushions. Painting your walls a neutral shade like white, magnolia or light grey will bring a light airy atmosphere into your house and help it feel more spacious. Your house will feel fresh and clean ready for you to personalise it with what you want. A calm neutral background gives you scope to be bold in the pictures you hang on it, as well as any accessories that are a little more ‘out there’. This allows you to add personality to your home without it looking cluttered or over the top. If you want to add some bolder colour then use accessories like lamps and rugs instead of painting the walls. A splash of colour on a rug or lamp looks really good but isn’t overbearing so you’re still left with a calm and light looking room.

Getting The Temperature Right
Getting the temperature right is important at home. During the winter you want it nice and cosy, and in the summer you want it cool and breezy. A great way to keep the right temperature in every season is to invest in good windows and doors, not only will they keep you safer from burglars but you’ll be free from draughts and damp too. They prevent the heat from escaping in the winter and prevent the sun from warming the rooms too much in the summer. UPVC doors and windows tend to be better than traditional wooden ones from both a security and insulation perspective. For the summer months, it’s worth investing in an air conditioner as even here in the UK it can get very hot in summer. It’s worth the money to be comfortable, and not hot and irritable from lack of sleep. On those cold winter nights, use blankets and throws and soft furnishings to give your home the cosy factor and make it a place that you really love spending time.

Invite Nature
One way we can bring a little joy into our homes is to add plants and flowers, these will boost mood and help us feel close to nature. Most of us when shopping for plants will choose how they look every time, rather than thinking about what is needed to keep them healthy and alive. If you know you’re not the best plant parent, opt for low maintenance plants such as cacti and succulents! There are house plants that not only look nice but benefit your home too, take the spider plant, for example. This can give you better air quality and only needs watering occasionally, so even if you are not too good with house plants, this little fighter will probably not wither up and die on you. Lots of plants around help you to feel closer to nature and in the long winter months when the trees are bare its nice to see greenery thriving in your home.

Personalising Your Home
Your home is the most personal place in the world – it’s your space. So it’s important to make it feel that way, we all want our houses to look like something out of Good Homes magazine, but they’re not show homes. And they don’t need to look like them – don’t be afraid to add personal touches like photos and travel souvenirs around to make the place feel like yours. Your travel souvenirs are important as they bring back memories of good times you have had, and your photos will always make you smile. Scented candles dotted around the house look good, and if you choose a scent you really love throughout, you’ll be welcomed home by it every time you step through the door.

Great ideas. We’ve just moved into a new house and we are just settling in and are trying to make it just right. We are going shopping next week for some plants to put around the house x
Kim Carberry recently posted…A Sunday roast was what we needed.
This is exactly what I needed! We just moved into a new home a couple of months ago and we haven’t made any changes to the rooms yet. My husband and I have been planning to makeover our living room just in time for our family and friends to come over. Also, we want to make it relaxing for both of us especially after a long day at work. These tips are amazing! I can’t wait to tell my husband about this. Thank you so much!
