Ever since I was a child music has been a big part of my life. I don’t think there’s anything better than sitting and listening to your favourite songs! So this year I thought I would start a brand new ‘Monthly Music’ series, and each month I will share one of my Spotify playlists with you and talk about 10 of my favourite songs from each one.
This month I’ve been binge-watching some of my favourite vampire movies and TV shows, so I thought I’d start by sharing a playlist full of songs from each of these. I should warn you that the majority of songs on here are from ‘The Vampire Diaries’. But this is just because it has an awesome soundtrack. I’ll be gutted when season 8 comes to an end.
So, without further ado, let me tell you a little about 10 of my favourite songs from this particular playlist. It was so hard to pick these out as I love all 100+ songs on here so much!!
01. PARSON JAMES – WAITING GAME – featured in The Originals
The first song I want to tell you about is a beautiful ballad called ‘Waiting Game’ by up-and-coming American artist, Parson James. I listened to this track quite a lot towards the end of last year when I was feeling really low and emotional as I felt I could really connect with the lyrics. It was a song that gave me hope. And whenever I listened to it I instantly felt better. I think it will be one of those songs that I’ll love forever and will always be grateful for. It’s truly awesome!
02. THE FRAY – NEVER SAY NEVER – featured in The Vampire Diaries
‘Never Say Never’ by The Fray has been one of my all-time favourite songs for a long time now. It was released back in 2009, reached number 87 in the UK singles chart and has barely been off my playlists ever since! It’s the sort of song that really stands the test of time, and I think I’ll be listening to it for many years to come!
03. CHRISTINA PERRI – A THOUSAND YEARS – featured in The Twilight Saga : Breaking Dawn Parts 1 & 2
I think it’s safe to say that Christina Perri is probably my all-time favourite female singer. So I couldn’t not include the one song that almost everyone thinks of whenever vampire movies are mentioned – ‘A Thousand Years’ from The Twilight Saga : Breaking Dawn Parts 1 and 2. ‘A Thousand Years’ really is the most beautiful ballad and I know lots of people who have danced their first dance to it at their wedding. Aww.
04. FABER DRIVE – NEVER COMING DOWN – featured in The Vampire Diaries
As I’m a big fan of pop punk music (actually, I’m a big fan of most music, as I’m sure you will find out over the next 12 months) I just couldn’t resist including a song by Faber Drive, who tick this box brilliantly. The song I chose to include is called ‘Never Coming Down’ and it featured on the 2009 album ‘Can’t Keep A Secret’. It was never released as a single, and I honestly think that was a big mistake as it’s super catchy and has you singing along from the very first time you hear it. Have a listen and let me know if you agree!
05. PLUMB – CUT – featured in The Vampire Diaries
Next up is a beautiful tear-jerker of a track from Plumb. ‘Cut’ was released way back in 2006 and made it to number 14 in the UK Indie chart. The song has a very Christian/Gospel feel to it, and is all about self-harm. It’s beautifully executed – deep, meaningful and very powerful. I imagine it to be the sort of song that most people could relate to, even those who don’t self-harm. For me, it’s just a beautiful song that I could listen to over and over again. I love it!
06. GREEN DAY – THE FORGOTTEN – featured in The Twilight Saga : Breaking Dawn Part 2
Green Day have been my favourite band for the best part of 19 years now, so I couldn’t create a playlist without including at least one of their songs. I decided to go with ‘The Forgotten’, which is a beautiful 5-minute piano ballad that would most definitely have you holding your lighter in the air at a rock concert. And believe it or not the track was recorded for part 2 of The Twilight Saga’s Breaking Dawn, but I personally think it got a bit of a bum deal as it was only used in the closing credits. Sacrilege!
07. ANBERLIN – ENJOY THE SILENCE – featured in The Vampire Diaries
This next song is actually a cover version of the 1990 Depeche Mode song ‘Enjoy the Silence’. Now, I’ve always liked the original version of this, but I actually think I prefer Anberlin’s interpretation of it! I’ll probably get a few head shakes from some of you for saying that, but it’s true. It’s a lot more upbeat than the original, so you can have a good old boogie to it. And it sounds a lot more modern as well, so you could play it at a party and it wouldn’t sound out of place. Awesome!
08. M– USE – SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLE – feature in The Twilight Saga
When I was in my early 20’s I was a little bit obsessed with Stephanie Meyer’s ‘Twilight’ book series, and I couldn’t wait for them to be turned in to movies. Unfortunately, they weren’t anywhere near as good as the books, but I do find myself watching them occasionally as a bit of a guilty pleasure. So I thought I’d mention that the song ‘Supermassive Black Hole’ by Muse is my favourite track from the first movie. It’s the song that’s played while the Cullen’s are playing baseball in the storm, and I don’t think they could have chosen a better track for that particular part. It just fit so well. And as I’ve loved Muse since I was a teen I was over the moon that they were asked to record a song for the saga.
09. ROSS COPPERMAN – HOLDING ON AND LETTING GO – featured in The Vampire Diaries
Next up I’ve picked a really lovely track by Ross Copperman called ‘Holding On And Letting Go’. This particular song was played during one of my favourite Vampire Diaries scenes – y’know, when Damon decides if he’s going to feel guilty it may as well be over something, so he kisses Elena. I remember downloading it as soon as I heard it as I thought it was a fantastic song. And it’s still one of my favourites to this day. Nice one Mr Copperman!
10. RAIGN – WHEN IT’S ALL OVER – featured in The Vampire Diaries
And last but certainly not least I chose this last song purely because Oscar (my 3 year old) sings along to it every time I play it! The song is called ‘When It’s All Over’ and is performed by singer/songwriter RAIGN, who you guys may recognize as a hopeful from the 2014 series of popular TV talent show ‘The X Factor’. Now, I have to be honest and say I’d never heard this particular song until it was featured in season 7 of ‘The Vampire Diaries’, but over the last few months it’s become a firm favourite in our house. I find the track to be quite haunting, yet strangely comforting at the same time. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it!
