When it comes down to it, and you really think about it, you know your home doesn’t feel too much like you. You know it’s decorated nicely and things look wonderful to the untrained eye, but you just don’t feel too comfortable in your own surroundings! You don’t feel at home, and you’re not sure what to do about it.
Well, we’ve got some ideas you might want to take a look at. Because you deserve to have a house that revolves around you, and feels like the kind of place you’ve always wanted to live in. Even if you haven’t been able to purchase a home of your own, you can still try to create your dream home in the place you currently live.

YOU HAVEN’T FIGURED OUT YOUR STYLE
Let’s face it, you haven’t figured out your kind of decorating style yet, have you? You don’t know what you like in an interior, and you’re not sure how to dress your rooms to your taste. You’ve tried a few different things here and there, but you’re just now sure if you really like the current makeup – a bit of bohemian chic here, a bit of Scandinavian minimalism there, etc.
Mostly, you want to find a style that makes you feel comfortable and cozy, and like you can spend some real time snuggling into that sofa with a good book and a pet, or like you can spend time in that kitchen cooking up some wonderful meals. Maybe you could take a quiz here, that’ll give you a quick and easy rundown you could work with? Or maybe you could just look up the different types of interior styles, and see which images you’re drawn to the most? There’s a lot of different ways to get inspired, you just need the time and money to!

THERE’S A REAL LACK OF PERSONAL ITEMS
Your home needs to feature a lot of your own items, that are unique to you, and cannot be bought in a shop anywhere. Because when you have personal, creative items to look at day by day, you’re going to feel a lot more at home in your home, and that’s what you’re really looking for here!
So what are you supposed to do in this situation? Well, it’s time to think about what you want to see on the walls, and what kind of personal items would look good on your bookshelves, your coffee table, on the mantelpiece and in the corners, amongst other areas that are looking a little empty right now.
Let’s start with the walls; you’re going to want to hang up some artwork you love, or some of your favourite photos. You can get these printed out on proper canvasses, and blown up to the right size without any distortion, at sites such as https://www.pixaprints.ie/. Because when you can hang up photos of friends and families in pride of place, you’re going to feel a lot more happy just hanging out in your living room, sipping coffee on your sofa cushions.
You can add these personal touches in any room you like. As well as adding wall hangings, you can even change the walls themselves. A feature wall with bright paint or wallpaper can bring a room together.
You can also consider features like acrylic splashbacks by Custom Splashbacks for your kitchen, as they are practical and easy to clean, but can also be customised to your preferences. You can pick a pattern or style you like, or even create your own that’s personal to you. This can make a huge difference to your kitchen and create a signature design feature that really stands out and puts your stamp on your home.
And then it’s time to go decor shopping, and in a whole different variety of stores – take your time to find the items you want, rather than the ones you think would be ‘right’. Because even if that bird sculpture or that potted cactus doesn’t fit with the rest of your decor, buy it anyway! You’ll be much happier if you do so, and your home will feel a lot more like you, rather than a show home you’d be happy to see in a catalogue.

THERE’S A LOT TO CLEAN UP
Your home might be a bit messy, but not in the way we’d usually think of a home being messy. No, instead, it has a lot of traffic through it, and the furniture and items you use to decorate your home are out of touch, scuffed up, and look a lot like they’ve seen better days. And because of that, when you look around the room, you probably don’t feel like you’ve got a cohesive interior style to work with. Indeed, you probably feel a bit bad about the way your home looks!
But you don’t have to live like this for much longer; there’s a lot you can do to restore those furniture and other decorative items. Even with just a bit of sanding and a lick of paint, if you’re living with mostly wooden pieces, you can make your home feel a lot more stylish and sophisticated. Of course, there could be a few more steps involved if some real harm has come to that sideboard.
Or, maybe you actually like the vintage look? There’s no harm in it, you just need to make sure your items are tidy, usable, and won’t leave you with splinters whenever you pull those drawers out!

REMEMBER, YOU’LL NEVER HAVE A ‘PERFECT’ HOME
And finally, it’s important to realise that you’re never going to have the ‘perfect’ home you may have in your head. You’re never going to really make the dream of a home become a reality, because it simply doesn’t exist! And you should give yourself a break here – you’ve done as much as you can to make your home the place you want to be, and that’s enough.
Because a home doesn’t need to be perfect in the way it looks or feels, as long as it’s perfect for you. You can chop and change the decor as you like, and as your taste in style changes, your home can too! You’re never stuck with one kind of decor, and that’s important to always keep in mind.

THE FINAL TAKEAWAY
If your home decor doesn’t feel like you, don’t sit there and complain about it! You can make the changes you want, as long as you know what you’re looking for in an interior style, and a budget to work with. So feel free to use the above tips as inspiration!
