How To Find Your Own Personal Style

Everyone has their own style, but they might not know exactly what it is, or they might not be confident enough to enjoy it. Because everyone is unique, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that every style is unique too, and this is something that we should all embrace! Forget the fashion trends and what everyone else is wearing. This is your own style, and it needs to work for you. If you’re not sure what yours might be, here are some ways to find out.

Look Around

Although we would never suggest copying someone else’s style, if you look around at what other people are wearing and how they are wearing it, you’re sure to spot something that you like. When you know what it is, you can build your style around it. For example, you might love the idea of wearing heels with jeans, in which case this can be the basis or your wardrobe. Or you might like someone’s colourful hair, and if that’s so, you can colour yours and go from there. Although your style needs to be yours alone, taking inspiration from others is a great way to begin if you feel lost.

Experiment

It may be that you think you have found your style, but when you actually go to put it all together, there is just something that doesn’t work quite right. This is where experimenting comes in. You can mix and match all kinds of different styles until you come up with something that you’re happy with. Internet shopping is ideal for this experimenting stage. You can buy glasses online at Mister Spex, clothes, or shoes, and you will be able to send back what you don’t want and keep what you do.

Remember, what you’re wearing doesn’t have to be what current trends say is ‘hot’ or ‘of the moment.’ Fashion will change, and it will change quickly. So although it’s fun to take an interest in it, your own style is something that will last a lot longer. It needs to be what you want, not what the magazines say you need.

Woman Clearing Out Her Wardrobe

Have A Clear-Out

When you are trying to work out your own style, it may be easier to start with your wardrobe. Take a good look at the clothes in it, and you will instantly know what you don’t want anymore. Take these items to a charity shop, sell them online or at a car boot sale, and you won’t have to worry about them anymore. What’s left in your wardrobe will only be items of clothes that you like, and if you can see a theme running through them, you will be able to start to work out a style. It might be the colour or the fit; it could be the type of clothes in general. It is a good foundation to work on.

Think About Your Lifestyle

Your lifestyle could dictate the kinds of clothes you will be most comfortable in, so this does need to be taken into consideration. For example, if you are on your feet all day, designer dresses and heels might not work for you because you won’t be comfortable. If you work in an office, jeans and trainers could be frowned upon. You can take your lifestyle as a springboard and work backwards from there to determine what is going to be best for you in terms of clothing.

It’s taken me 50 years to really find my style! I do wonder if your style evolves over time, but then again, I can’t remember a time when I thought I looked as good as I think I do now 🙂

Oh these are some good tips! I am all about dressing in your own personal style and ignoring what’s “hot” and on trend. I love the tip about starting with your current wardrobe and taking bits to the charity shop – brilliant way to assess the situation without feeling overwhelmed!

I think you really do have to think about your lifestyle. I love tailored suits but they don’t exactly look right on the school run.

I love buying anything that’s comfortable and something that doesn’t touches the skin, so no matter how pretty something is, I don’t buy it if it’s not comfortable. You’ve shared some great tips!
