There’s something special about uncovering a hidden gem while travelling. It’s exciting to go somewhere that a lot of people have never been before. We’ve all seen holiday photos and heard stories about trips to common travel destinations. Which is why it’s exciting when you bring something new to the table.
As you can see in the title, my hidden gem for you to visit this year is Kazakhstan. You probably know very little about this country, so let me explain why it should feature in your travel plans sometime soon.
There’s So Much Natural Beauty
Kazakhstan is a funny country because it can boast a lot of things that you often find all over the world, but they’re all rolled into one place. What’s more, most of these things are natural and beautiful. For example, from December to April, it plays host to one of the coolest ski resorts in the world. Shymbulak Ski Resort is close to one of the main cities and provides a gorgeous white backdrop during the winter. Not only that, but Kazakhstan also has something called the Charyn Canyon. This piece of natural beauty is their answer to the Grand Canyon. It’s absolutely massive, perfect for pictures, and a real ‘must-see’ place. Then, you have just the general look and feel of the country; it’s incredibly beautiful to behold.
It’s The Ultimate Relaxation Holiday
It goes without saying that this is quite a remote place to visit. It’s also not one of the most advanced countries you’ll ever go to – but this plays into your hands. Kazakhstan is a great place to go if you’re looking to relax and have a bit of a detox from modern life. There are luxury hotels like The Ritz-Carlton Astana in the capital city, but that’s pretty much where modern commercialism ends. You can relax in your hotel, but then take long walks around the city and explore all the ancient relics and sites. Phone signal is pretty poor, so it’s a chance to detach yourself from your screens for once in your life. If you want to go somewhere quiet and relaxing, this is the place to be. There are almost no tourists here too, so you don’t have to worry about crowds.
Experience A Completely Different Culture
The thing about Kazakhstan is that the people live by a completely different set of cultural norms to what you or I are used to. This provides you with such an eye-opening experience as soon as you set foot in the country. All of the locals are so lovely and friendly; everyone is keen to help you out and point you in the right direction. Not only that, but the country has such a rich history, which is reflected in the culture there. If you really want to learn something new, then talk to the locals about the history, or visit one of the cultural museums.
Try something different this year and give Kazakhstan some attention. It’s a very good travel destination and is probably ideal for anyone going on a gap year in Asia.
