If like me, you work from home, you may find yourself wanting to transform a spare room in your house into a home office. And I think that’s a great idea! I mean, at some point during the day you’ll want to switch off and take a little time for yourself. And that’s really hard to do if you’re surrounded by work stuff. Having a dedicated space that you can close the door on at the end of the day is a much better option.
But, let’s face it, creating a home office can come at a bit of a cost. So today I thought I’d talk a bit about the essential items I think every home office needs. The essentials, so to speak. I hope you guys enjoy having a read and that it gives you some ideas of what to include in your own home office. Are you sitting comfortably? Then let’s jump right in!
01. Stylish Desk
OK, first thing’s first! I genuinely believe that every home office should have a stylish desk. Most things are done on a computer these days, and a great desk is perfect for sitting your laptop or computer on. They also tend to have lots of drawers in, which are perfect for keeping all your important documents or stationery items in. As someone who spent years working from the sofa, I’ve found that being at a desk actually helps my productivity, and all of my work-related stuff stays together in one place now, rather than being scattered around the house. I can’t recommend having a desk area highly enough!
02. Comfortable Chair
So, you’ve got your desk. Now you need a chair so you can sit at it. My top tip here would be to get a super comfy chair, as you’re likely to be sitting in it for hours. I have Scoliosis, which is a curvature of the spine, so I always opt for chairs that have high backs. This means I can sit back in the chair when I’m feeling a little achy and have a little rest, rather than being hunched over my desk all day. These days computer chairs are a lot more stylish than they used to be, and you can pick them up fairly cheaply too. I mean, just how cute are the ones in the image above? I love them!
03. Laptop or Computer
As I mentioned before, most things are done on a computer these days, which means you’ll most definitely need one in your home office. At the moment, I use an Asus laptop, which does a great job. But I’d like to upgrade to an Apple iMac one day. I hear they’re great for people who blog and make YouTube videos, so I think it would be perfect for me. If you guys have one, let me know what they’re like!
One thing I’ve found I use a lot since starting to work from home is my printer. I always seem to be printing things off! I have the Epson Expression Home XP-245, which is a Wi-Fi printer, scanner and copier, and I just love it. It’s perfect for printing off important documents. Or, if a client needs me to sign something for them they can send it over and then I just print it off, sign it, scan it, and e-mail it back to them. All in just a few short minutes. It’s a truly brilliant product and I couldn’t imagine being without it.
05. USB Cup Warmer
I don’t know about you guys, but whenever I’m working I find that I’ll often make myself a cup of tea and then totally forget about it! Well, there’s a solution for this nowadays – and it comes in the shape of a chocolate biscuit. Yes, you can now buy a USB Cup Warmer to keep those hot drinks nice and warm while you’re working. They just plug into the USB port on your computer and you switch it on and place your mug on it and it slows down the cooling process, meaning your drink stays warmer for longer. Pretty cool, huh?!
If you’re going to be spending a lot of time in one place during the day then you definitely need it to look nice. Which is why I recommend hanging some artwork in your home office. I’m a big fan of a company called Desenio, who sell super cute posters that you can frame and hang on your wall. They do all sorts of different designs, and they’re not that expensive either, which makes them perfect for brightening up the walls!
07. Plenty of Stationery
Next up is the one thing I know a lot of us go crazy for. And that’s stationery! I love anything cute and colourful, and there’s probably enough pens, pencils, paperclips and notebooks in my stationery drawer (OK, drawers) to last me more than one lifetime. If you’re ever on the lookout for cheap stationery, I highly recommend giving officestationery.co.uk a try. They have some great products at affordable prices. I just love them.
08. Tea and Coffee Making Facilities
This next one might not be all that important to everyone, but it’s most definitely an essential for me. And that’s having tea and coffee making facilities in my home office. It means I can make a hot drink while I’m working without having to leave the room and finding something else that needs doing besides work. Believe me, this has happened to me so many times in the past! I now have a little tray in the corner of my office with my Tassimo machine on. I also have a selection of drinks and plenty of clean cups there so I don’t have to keep trekking to the kitchen. It’s a little lifesaver.
09. Sound System
I don’t know about you guys, but I love listening to music while I work. So I always have some sort of sound system hooked up in my home office so I can listen to music whenever I want. At the moment I just connect my phone to a Bluetooth speaker so I can listen to one of my many playlists on Spotify. But any sound system would work well. A bit of background noise can really help with productivity.
10. Good Lighting
And last but not least, I highly recommend having good lighting in your home office. There’s nothing worse than having to squint at your computer screen or paperwork because there’s not enough light in the room. Although I know that energy saving light bulbs would save me a lot of money over the course of a year, I tend to go for daylight bulbs instead. I find these give out a lot of good light (imagine bringing the outdoors in). And they’re perfect for me because I take a lot of product photographs and stuff which would come out terribly with artificial light. I know they’re not for everyone though, and I’d always suggest going for whichever bulb type you prefer.
And there you have it, my list of 10 things I think every home office should have. I hope you enjoyed having a read, and that it gave you some ideas of things you could buy for your own home office.
Do you guys agree with my list, or would you have picked other essentials?
